Which cat net is right for my cat?
Indoor cats often sit by the window for hours, watching the world outside. They want to get out, smell the fresh air, and lie in the sun. However, especially in cities or near busy roads, letting them roam freely is simply too dangerous. A cat net solves exactly this problem: Your velvet paw can enjoy the balcony or the terrace, and you don't have to worry.
But which net is the right one? That depends on a few factors.
Mesh size: The head makes the decision
The mesh size depends on the size of your cat's head, not its weight. Under no circumstances should the head be able to fit through the mesh. Here is a simple test you can do at home: Cut a piece of string and form a loop. Try to slide it over your cat's head. If it slips over easily, the mesh is too large.
- 50 mm mesh size (20 cm string): for large, robust cats
- 40 mm mesh size (16 cm string): for medium-sized cats
- 30 mm mesh size (12 cm string): for small, delicate velvet paws
- 20 mm mesh size: for kittens being reared
Yarn thickness and tear resistance
The more active and heavier your cat is, the stronger the yarn should be. Our nets are available in several versions:
- Standard (1.0 mm, approx. 30 kg tear resistance): for calm, light cats
- Robust / Extra Strong (1.3 / 1.5 mm, approx. 55 kg): for active, adventurous animals
- Extreme (braided yarn, 100 kg per thread): for true escape artists and biters. Despite its strength, it is only 1 mm thick, barely visible, and features double-knotted meshes
Important to know: Cats have very sharp teeth. Anything you can cut with a pair of scissors, your cat can potentially bite through as well. Depending on the net, this will take more or less time. If you want to be on the safe side, choose the Extreme line.
Your cat's behavior
Does your cat prefer to comfortably observe the hustle and bustle on the street? Or does it systematically test every weak point in the net? This makes a difference when choosing the yarn thickness. Calm animals get along well with Standard nets. Climbing artists and escapees need more.
Color: Black is less conspicuous than white
That sounds strange at first, but it is true. Dark nets visually blend into the background, similar to a mosquito net. Black is well-suited for balconies against a bright sky, while olive green fits well in the garden. White or light-colored nets are much more noticeable. All colors are UV-stabilized and designed for continuous outdoor use.
Measurements: Better to order a little more
Cats can jump up to two meters high from a standing position. The net should be at least 2 m high, measured from the highest possible jumping surface. Measure the width and length from wall to wall and add 5–10%. The net sags slightly between the poles and needs this extra margin. You can easily cut it to size on-site with normal household scissors, ideally once it is already hung up.
A word about the knots
Sometimes you might notice an extra knot in the net that looks slightly out of place. This happens when a thread runs out during production and a new one is tied on. This is not a defect, but unavoidable with handmade nets. All knots, including these, are tied so securely that they will not come undone. The protective function is not compromised in any way.
Our nets are sold by the meter and custom-cut to your specific dimensions. For suitable mounting options, take a look at our telescopic rods and over-climb protection.
