The Right Cat Net for Every Cat: BOY's 6 Variants Explained
By BOY Cat Nets Editorial Team ·
Not every cat is the same - and not every cat net is either. BOY manufactures six net variants, each optimised for a specific combination of cat temperament, body size, and installation requirement. This article explains what distinguishes each variant, who it is right for, and which questions to ask before ordering.
The Most Important Points at a Glance
- BOY offers six net variants - from Standard (approx. 30 kg tear resistance per strand) to Extreme (100 kg) - all custom-made to your exact dimensions.
- The Transparent net is the only variant with a nearly invisible monofilament strand - ideal where aesthetics matter most.
- The Extreme net is made from the same fibres used in bulletproof vests: 100 kg tear resistance, yet only 1 mm thin and barely visible at distance.
- The Wire-Reinforced net combines nylon with an integrated stainless steel core - the right choice for determined chewers who can damage conventional yarn.
- Choosing the wrong variant - too weak for an active cat, or too coarse a mesh for a small cat - is the most common and most avoidable purchasing mistake.
- All six variants are UV-impregnated, double-knotted, and compatible with the full BOY mounting system, including the stainless steel overclimb guard.
The decision sounds simple: buy a cat net, hang it on the balcony, done. In practice, the net has to match three things at once - the cat's head size (mesh), the cat's strength and behaviour (strand and tear resistance), and the installation context (visibility, durability, rental apartment constraints). A net that is too weak will be destroyed by a determined chewer. A mesh that is too wide is dangerous for small or slender cats. A strand that is too thick is unnecessary for a calm, lightweight cat and costs more than needed. The six BOY variants cover the full range of real-world requirements - the following sections explain which is which.
How to Find Your Variant - Three Questions First
Before looking at the individual net descriptions, three questions narrow the choice considerably:
- How active and how heavy is your cat? A calm, lightweight cat does fine with the Standard net. An active, heavy cat or a cat that regularly throws itself against the net needs Extra Strong or higher. A confirmed chewer needs Wire-Reinforced or Extreme.
- Does the net need to be as invisible as possible? If the view from the balcony or the appearance from outside is a priority, Transparent or Extreme (1 mm strand, barely visible at a few metres) are the right options.
- Are there kittens or very small, slender cats involved? Young animals and slender breeds need the tightest mesh available - 20 mm. The Standard and Extreme variants are available in 20 mm; the Robust variant also starts at 20 mm.
With these three answers in hand, the right variant is almost always clear. The sections below provide the full technical detail for each one.
Variant 1 - Standard
The Standard net is BOY's entry-level variant and the most widely sold. It has a twisted nylon strand of 1.0 mm diameter and a tear resistance of approximately 30 kg per strand. The mesh has a square configuration, which makes installation straightforward - the net hangs straight and does not need to be pulled diagonally to align correctly.
The Standard net is available in black and in mesh sizes of 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm. The dark colour makes the strand nearly invisible from a few metres away, even in the 1.0 mm gauge. All meshes are double-knotted so they do not shift under load, and the yarn is UV-impregnated for permanent outdoor use.
The Standard net is the right choice for calm, lightweight cats that do not chew aggressively and do not throw themselves against the net with force. It is not recommended for heavy cats, confirmed chewers, or cats with an established habit of testing the net's limits - for those, the Extra Strong, Wire-Reinforced, or Extreme variants are the appropriate choice.
Variant 2 - Transparent
The Transparent net uses a monofilament strand rather than a twisted yarn. Monofilament is a single continuous synthetic fibre - the same material used in fishing line - which means the strand has no surface texture and reflects light differently from a twisted thread. At a few metres' distance, the net is nearly invisible to the human eye, making it the most discreet option in the BOY range.
The Transparent net is available in a clear/transparent colourway. It is suitable for small to medium-sized cats in installations where the visual appearance of the net is the primary concern - for example, a balcony facing a courtyard with strict aesthetic expectations, or a situation where the landlord has raised objections to visible netting.
The monofilament construction also means the strand is less resistant to biting than a twisted yarn of comparable thickness. The Transparent net is therefore explicitly not recommended for cats that chew on the net, for heavy cats, or for outdoor installations with high UV and weather exposure over many years. If the net must be invisible and durable under load, the Extreme variant at 1 mm twisted-braid strand is the better solution.
Variant 3 - Robust
The Robust net steps up to a 1.3 mm strand with a tear resistance of approximately 40-45 kg per strand - a meaningful increase over the Standard's 30 kg. It is made from high-quality UV-impregnated nylon yarn and is available in olive green and white in mesh sizes from 20 mm upwards.
The Robust net is designed for active cats and for situations where the Standard net's strength is borderline. The 20 mm mesh option makes it particularly well suited to kittens and young animals: the tight mesh prevents small heads from passing through, and the increased strand strength handles the unpredictable energy of young cats better than the Standard. Breeders who need a reliable rearing net often choose the Robust or the Extra Strong variant for this reason.
The olive green colour integrates well into garden and terrace settings, where a black net can look more conspicuous against vegetation. For indoor balconies or urban environments, the Standard's black may be less noticeable - colour choice is worth considering alongside strand strength.
Variant 4 - Extra Strong
The Extra Strong net has the same 1.5 mm strand diameter as the Robust variant but a higher specified tear resistance of approximately 55 kg per strand. It is available in both olive green and black, and in mesh sizes of 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm.
The Extra Strong is the recommended baseline for heavy cats - those over approximately 5-6 kg - and for active animals that regularly interact with the net by jumping against it or using it as a climbing surface. In households with multiple cats, all of whom may land on the net simultaneously, the higher tear resistance provides a meaningful safety margin over the Standard.
The availability in both olive green and black gives buyers flexibility: black for urban balconies where a dark, recessive net blends into the background; olive green for garden terraces or green-faced balconies where the net should blend into surrounding vegetation rather than stand out as a dark grid.
Variant 5 - Wire-Reinforced
The Wire-Reinforced net is specifically engineered for cats that chew through conventional netting. The strand combines nylon with an integrated stainless steel wire core, resulting in a tear resistance of approximately 95 kg per strand - more than three times the Standard net. The stainless steel core cannot be bitten through by a cat under normal circumstances, while the nylon outer layer maintains flexibility and keeps the surface non-abrasive.
This variant is available in black. It is the right choice for cats with a confirmed history of damaging nets - a behaviour that is more common than many owners expect, particularly in cats that are under-stimulated, have high prey drive, or have developed a habit of working at the net's attachment points. It is also the appropriate choice for outdoor enclosures or garden enclosures where the net is exposed to higher mechanical stress from the environment as well as from the animals.
One practical note: the Wire-Reinforced net should be cut with wire cutters or heavy scissors rather than standard household scissors. The stainless steel core requires more force to cut cleanly. As with all BOY nets, cutting should be done after installation, along a mesh row, at least 1-1.5 cm from the knot.
Variant 6 - Extrem
The Extrem net is BOY's highest-performance variant. The strand is braided rather than twisted - the same fibre construction used in ballistic protection textiles, including bulletproof vests. Tear resistance is 100 kg per strand. Despite this, the strand diameter is only approximately 1 mm, and the colour - olive green and black - means the net is barely visible from several metres away. All meshes are double-knotted, preventing any shift under load.
The Extrem net is available in mesh sizes of 30 mm, 40 mm, and 50 mm. It is the right choice for cats that have destroyed previous nets of conventional construction, for large outdoor enclosures under sustained mechanical stress, and for owners who want the highest available safety margin regardless of cat temperament - knowing that the net will not be a limiting factor under any foreseeable condition.
The combination of maximum tear resistance, minimal visual footprint (1 mm strand, olive green), and double-knotted construction makes the Extreme net the option to choose when no compromise is acceptable on any of these dimensions simultaneously. It is also the most suitable net for situations where the Transparent net's low visibility is desired but its limited strength is a concern - the Extrem net achieves near-invisibility through strand thinness and colour rather than through monofilament construction, and it does so without the chew-resistance limitations of monofilament.

Mesh Size: The Decision That Comes Before Variant Choice
Strand strength and mesh size are independent decisions - but mesh size must be confirmed before ordering any variant. The mesh must be tight enough that your cat's head cannot pass through, even under pressure. The simplest way to determine the right mesh size is the BOY string test: cut a piece of string to the length corresponding to the mesh size you are considering (8 cm for 20 mm, 12 cm for 30 mm, 16 cm for 40 mm, 20 cm for 50 mm), form a loop, and try to slide it over your cat's head. If the loop passes the eyes, the mesh is too large - move to the next smaller size.
When in doubt, choose the tighter mesh. A slightly tighter mesh costs nothing extra and removes any ambiguity. A mesh that turns out to be marginally too wide, on the other hand, cannot be corrected after the net has been custom-cut and delivered.
Kittens and slender breeds need 20 mm mesh. The Standard, Robust, and - for the most demanding requirements - the Extreme variant all offer 20 mm. The Extra Strong and Wire-Reinforced variants start at 30 mm; if you need 20 mm and also need wire reinforcement or extra-strong nylon, the Robust at 20 mm is the closest available option in the BOY range.
Custom Sizing: Why Every BOY Net Is Made to Measure
All six variants are manufactured to the customer's exact dimensions - length, height, and mesh size are specified at the time of order. BOY does not stock pre-cut nets. This has a practical consequence: because the net is produced specifically for your balcony, terrace, or window opening, it cannot be returned or exchanged once cut. Accurate measurement before ordering is therefore essential.
When measuring, add 5-10% to the net's length to account for sag between mounting poles. For balconies up to 10 m, add approximately 5 cm per measured metre; for longer spans, up to 10 cm per metre. The net should hang loosely rather than be stretched taut - a slightly sagging net is actually harder for a cat to climb than a tightly tensioned one, because the sagging surface offers less purchase.
If you are unsure about the right variant, mesh size, or dimensions for your specific situation, BOY's phone consultation is available before you place your order. The team has over 50 years of accumulated installation experience and can advise on unusual balcony geometries, rental apartment constraints, and multi-cat households.
The Mounting System: One System for All Six Variants
All six net variants are fully compatible with BOY's modular mounting accessories: telescopic poles (galvanised steel from €9.95/piece; stainless steel from €20.60/piece), tension poles for floor-to-ceiling installation without drilling, clamps for railings and walls, and braided fastening cord. The stainless steel overclimb protection angled at approximately 115° inward to minimise horizontal grip surface - attaches to any BOY telescopic pole and is the same regardless of which net variant is used.
Telescopic poles are spaced approximately 2 m apart. A braided cord threaded through the top row of meshes prevents the net from sagging between poles. Step-by-step installation videos for all common scenarios - drill-free with telescopic poles, tension poles, full frame, and garden enclosure - are available on the BOY website.
Nets and mounting accessories are ordered separately, which means you can configure exactly the hardware your specific balcony or terrace requires - and replace individual components if needed without buying a complete new kit.
