Frequently Asked Questions about Cat Nets
Why do I need a cat net at all?
Cats are curious. That's their nature. And it's precisely this curiosity that sometimes proves fatal for them. A butterfly flies by, the cat jumps onto the railing, loses its balance. This happens faster than you think. A cat net catches them and prevents them from leaving the balcony or property unnoticed. There are also suitable models for windows and doors.
What is the right mesh size?
That depends on the size of your cat's head. Cut a thread, form a loop, and try to slide it over your cat's head. If it slides on easily, the mesh is too large.
- 20 cm thread: 50 mm mesh size (large, strong cats)
- 16 cm thread: 40 mm (medium-sized animals)
- 12 cm thread: 30 mm (small, delicate felines)
- 20 mm: for kittens being raised
The loop should catch in front of the cat's eyes. Then you have the right size.
What is the difference between the different cat nets?
- Standard (1.0 mm yarn, approx. 30 kg tear resistance) is completely sufficient for calm, light cats.
- Transparent (almost invisible, monofilament yarn): for small to medium-sized cats where aesthetics and discretion are paramount – not suitable for strong biters.
- Robust and Extra Strong (1.5 mm, approx. 55 kg) are the better choice for active and heavier animals.
- Wire-reinforced (nylon yarn with integrated stainless steel thread, approx. 95 kg tear resistance): especially suitable for spirited, freedom-loving animals and strong biters.
- Extreme line (braided yarn, 100 kg per thread) is for cats that truly test everything. The yarn is still only 1 mm thin, barely visible, and made with double-knotted meshes. If you're unsure, just opt for the stronger version.
Which cat net is the best?
That depends on your cat. There's no universal winner. But if you want to be on the safe side, choose the Extreme nets: highest bite and tear resistance, yet visually discreet. For most domestic cats, however, Standard or Robust are completely sufficient.
Which color is the most discreet?
Dark nets. Sounds strange, but it's true. Black or olive green disappear into the background, similar to a mosquito net. Light or white nets, on the other hand, look like a wall. Black is ideal for balconies exposed to the open sky, while olive green works well for gardens and terraces. All colors are UV-stabilized and withstand sun, rain, and frost without problems.
What material are the nets made of?
Made of synthetic nylon yarn, with some models additionally reinforced with an interwoven stainless steel thread. This makes the nets robust, tear-resistant, and weather-resistant. The yarn is non-toxic, which is especially important if your cat likes to chew.
How high should the net be?
At least 2 meters, measured from the last possible jumping surface. Cats can easily jump 150–200 cm from a standing start. Never underestimate that. If you want to be completely safe, supplement the net with our climbing protection. This prevents particularly ambitious climbers from getting over the top.
How much net do I need to order?
Measure the length and width of the area, then add 5–10%. The net sags slightly between the poles and needs this reserve. Better slightly too much than too little. You can trim any excess on site with normal household scissors.
Can I cut the net myself?
Yes. Simply cut along the mesh row, at least 1–1.5 cm away from the knot. It's best to cut when the net is already hung. This way, you can immediately see if anything is missing.
How do I attach the net?
Two options: Either you thread the telescopic poles directly through the meshes, or you attach the net to the poles with net ties. The second option saves significantly more time and nerves. A braided cord through the top row of meshes also ensures that the net doesn't sag between the poles. For balconies with and without drilling, you can find detailed instructions on our assembly page.
How taut should the net be?
Loose, not taut. This may sound strange at first, but there's a good reason: a net that's too taut provides your cat with support when climbing. A slightly sagging net is harder to climb. Find the right balance with a bit of sensitivity.
What is the distance between the telescopic poles?
About 2 meters between the poles. This has proven to be the most effective in practice. The net doesn't sag too much, and the poles are stable.
Can I install without drilling?
Yes. With our telescopic poles, you can clamp the net between the floor and ceiling or between walls, without a single dowel. Especially practical for rented apartments. A step-by-step video guide can be found on the homepage: Cat net installation without drilling.
Am I allowed to install a cat net as a tenant?
That depends on your rental agreement. Structural changes usually require the landlord's consent. The drill-free option with telescopic poles is permitted in most cases because it leaves no permanent marks. If in doubt, ask your landlord, preferably in writing.
What are the extra knots in the net?
Occasionally, you may see an additional knot in the net that looks a bit unusual. This happens when a thread runs out during production and a new one needs to be tied on. This is not a defect and does not compromise quality. All knots, including these, are secured so they won't come undone. The protective function of the net remains fully intact.
Can I wash the net?
Yes. At low temperatures in the washing machine or simply rinse with a garden hose. This is completely sufficient for normal dirt.
